I was actually talking to someone about that the other day. There's a couple of different possibilities with that? Like it could be when we go back home, our memories of this place get erased which is kind of a shit deal. Or being brought here creates an offshoot timeline.
[ which... kind of also sucks but less than getting your memories erased. ]
Where I'm from, when an offshoot timeline happens, the prime one keeps going as normal. Think of it as there being two parallel timelines where everything is going exactly the same in each, but in one you suddenly take a sharp left instead of going straight. So suddenly, you're no longer the prime timeline and the other one now is. So the new prime timeline will keep going and everything that you were going to do in that one happens there.
[ he has no idea if that makes sense or not but it's really been a while since he has had to explain how different timelines might work... ]
I guess another possibility is that we just stop existing in that other timeline altogether? Like we were just plucked out of there and put into this one.
It's hard to say. That's not really how it works where I'm from... although I guess it did, in fact, happen once but that's a really complicated story that I technically wasn't around for.
But one scenario is that the timeline keeps going on, but you no longer exist in it. Maybe everyone's memories of you gets wiped or it's like you vanished. Another is that maybe that timeline just stops being a thing altogether.
[ the only time something like this happened with karkat, the timeline had gotten completely screwed over anyway and had to be completely retconned. thus, he does not remember it happening. ]
We gave him a general rundown. A lot of it was shit we had to explain to him since the general existence of certain people would not make sense otherwise.
[ he then quickly adds, ] But I think that kind of info should be given on a case by case basis? And based on whether or not they actually want to know the spoilers.

[With worry, she asks,] What do you think happens to the original timeline if creating a new one is true?

[Even her wry tone doesn't mask her worry.]
What happens to the people in that other timeline if it stops...existing? I mean, my friend's here right now, so...

[Her frown can practically be heard in her words.]
So what happened to that friend who was two years behind? Did you guys...fill them in on what happened back home?

Thanks. For explaining--again. My friend's the first person from home that I've seen here, and I guess there's a lot I missed.

[ since that implies korra is the one... behind... ]
