[He smiles, taking the reluctant fistbump like a first place in the national lottery.
Unlike Karkat Cutter has never had a hard time making friends, but he will openly admit that his skill of letting any relationship grow closer than skin-deep needs some serious working on. He just keeps shying away when somebody reaches the level where relying on each other would become an expected thing, mainly because he cannot find it in him to trust himself to be able to come through for anybody. It's awkward to explain, but the fear of letting others down is there and gnawing away on Cutter more often than not when he isn't going out of his way to do something that'll make him forget about it for a while.
He knows that it makes him somewhat hard on himself and the air around him gloomy, but he cannot help it!
When there are reasons to be happy about something he embraces them fully, though. He likes himself way more when he is able to shake off his worries because he then feels like he's flying.
Karkat made him feel this way, so he has a loyal ally now, whether he wants to or not.]
You sure you're not just simply tired? It's pretty late.
My hours are normally pretty shit, so I'm always tired.
[ he very much needs a new job. he's planning on hunting for one, with better hours that won't make him have to stay up all night, but so far he's still running on less sleep than what is recommended. ]
Are you happy?
[ since... the implication is that he is. god, it amazes him that people can be open like that in regards to non-angry ranting.
He shoves his hands in his pockets and tilts his head before he flashes him another smile.]
I guess! I was really upset earlier when I sang that silly song and ran just to tire myself out and get the out outta my system, but meeting you and doing this silly singing match really lifted my spirits! You're my first luck in this month, Karkat!
[ oh my god, how is someone supposed to respond to that? if his hands weren't already tucked into his pockets he'd cover his face again, but as it stands he will just settle for staring up at the sky in a very "why" gesture. ]
And you didn't even want to sing. So, you're welcome.
[Oops, now he's said it! Well, no regrets! (and also no shame for admitting his emotions freely, it wouldn't be manly not to do it after being point blank asked about them!)]
[He takes the hit with a laugh. Cutter is a pretty good tank, especially as long as he knows that what gets tossed at him has no real malicious intentions.]
Ow! [He pulls back, but not before sticking out his tongue cheekily at him,]
Don't be so rough! Anyway, we should exchange our contact information, what do you think?! It'd be embarrassing if I can't even call my spouse!
[This is will be a stupid nickname and he will die if anybody ever takes it serious, but you bet he'll set it as Karkat's contact information for now.]
[ luckily, karkat is sarcastic enough to not take it seriously. this is probably the fastest he'll exchange contact details with someone though? it's weird how retrospec streamlines how quickly you become friends with someone.
[ FRIEND... okay, this is not the time to get emotionally constipated over the concept of friendship. ]
Are you new here or something?
[ that or for some reason he keeps hanging out with people not his age??
granted, it took forever for karkat to also get more than three friends his age and he lived here for a couple of years. but cutter seems a lot friendlier than he is. ]
Oh, I'm very good with the dragging and starting them part. It's the keeping it up that's the challenge.
[Cutter is friendly enough and he knows it. It's mostly because he enjoys taking genuine interest in people and flourishes in their company, but once it comes to the part where you'd be basically 'joining their team'....? That's where he balks and runs because he is afraid that they will find that he isn't what they want after all.
It's easier to be remembered for one's good qualities and having drifted away rather than as a let-down, right?]

[ he repeats it, looking a cross between confused and mildly offended. he always looks mildly offended, though, so don't take that too hard. ]
Jesus fuck. We're going with Karkles now.
no subject
[Don't hit him, it won't help.]
no subject
also it's too late, he's hitting him, because karkat does not learn. ]

[ he's more poking cutter now, so at least it's no longer hitting. ]

Mind your manners or I'll demand a divorce!
no subject
I should be the one asking for a goddamn divorce here. You've brought nothing to this relationship besides an imprint from where you landed on me.
no subject
Well, at least I left an impression in that case! All you did was singing about one night stands!
no subject
Don't say it like that! It gives the implication that you're more serious about this relationship than I am!
[ karkat what are you even arguing about. ]
no subject
I'm not?!
[This teasing has gone way off the tracks and Cutter is loving it.]
no subject
[ he's not even sure how they got here, but he refuses to back down now even if the conversation topic is dumb. ]
no subject
Yup, it totally does.
no subject
[ he reaches over and flicks cutter on the forehead. that's what he gets for coming so close!! ]

If we divorce you'll have to delete it.

This brings my count of friends my own age I've made in this city to three!

I moved here about nine weeks ago and got dragged right into this retrospec mess.
I'm also... not really that good with this whole making bonds thing. [Yeah.]
no subject
[ most of the people who drags karkat around how obnoxiously friendly and they steamroll him. ]
