[ karkat may not know a lot of things about earth and its culture, but one thing he definitely does understand is the importance of VARSITY JACKETS and DATING in human courtship. it's like, super important. ]

[ karkat is going to take a moment to walk around jake, checking out the jacket. ugh it's so cool? he's jealous. he wants a varsity jacket. he will wear it over his dumb sweater and die of heatstroke. ]

So are you two actually together now or are you still just courting?

[Jake is practically a model right now with how proud he is to wear it so that works.]

Just courting. We're not ready to date yet. He took me stargazing with a picnic basket though. And we practiced dancing together.

That's so grossly romantic. How long has this been going on for?

[They're so bad at imagining Striders and romance.]

Let me think... Since the 8th. We've been having fun with it. It's... really romantic. We didn't do anything like this before we dated or when we dated. It was different. This is something out of a movie though.

[ ugh this is so like a movie? ]

What the fuck. It kind of pisses me off that you guys came up with this before I did? Whose idea was it-- no, it was Dirk's, wasn't it. Did he bring it up as some kind of ironic gesture.

[Jake smiles, bashful.] Well, courting was my idea. But most of the dates have been his. To, um, quote something he said on our last date, "In the most achingly sincere manner, so genuine and devoted that it is itself a rich source of ironic humour, I'm doing this for you."

[ there are many things about this. number one, jake actually memorized that line which says a lot? it definitely says a lot. jake is sappy and gross.

number two.... there is no number two, the first thing is just so ugh. ]

How are you going to know when you're ready to move on from the courting stage to the dating stage anyway?

[It's because he's in love and that was the most romantic thing he's ever heard about irony.]

I... don't really know. I think we'll just know? How did you know you were ready?

[ it's cute how jake assumes that dave and karkat's relationship is anything other than one of them accidentally saying something embarrassing and then they both freak out over it until they reach some sort of conclusion. ]

Uh... we... didn't? Dave just kind of accidentally confessed to me like the idiot that he is and we started dating since [ he basically mumbles this part which shows how embarrassed he is to admit it, since he's normally very loud ] I liked him back.

[Jake grins wide.] That sure is sugar.

[He sits down on the edge of his bed.]

I don't know if it's that easy for us. We're having an awful lot of fun and I absolutely fancy him more than ever, I think that's mutual, but... I think we're both still scared of bumbling it all up again? I know I am.

No matter how much you prepare for it the two of you are still going to fuck up though. I don't mean that in a "you're doomed and can never be in a relationship" way. Dave and I fuck up all the time, I'm surprised he hasn't du-- any-fucking-way. I don't want you to start dating and then the first time something bad happens that you have an aneurysm and conclude that you rushed into it and weren't ready?

[With a sheepish smile, he rubs the back of his head.]

Well... you're not wrong to worry about it. We haven't had a fight yet. I snapped at him, uh, twice? Since arriving here. And I felt awful both times. Even if we did quarrel now, I might just blame myself regardless of who was at fault. That's part of why we can't date yet though. I'm not very healthy.
